Propolis - A Natural Defence Against Infection

By: Greg Sanders

Description

Propolis is a resinous substance gathered by honeybees from the bark and leaves of a variety of trees. The bees use this substance to line the walls of the hive like a cement, to fill gaps and holes. Their purpose in doing this is to protect the hive against contamination from germs. It not only protects the outside layers of the hive but internally as well. It has been found that if a mouse wanders into the hive, the bees will sting it to death and then surround the body with Propolis which then acts as a protective seal against bacterial contamination which cannot pass through the Propolis layer.

This unique action of Propolis works in a similar way in its application against viral infection in humans. The Propolis, when it comes across infection actually 'protects' the virus. It puts a protective layer of protein around the virus, locking away the infectious material thereby rendering it harmless to the organism.

Propolis contains more than 300 different substances. Over 60 different pharmacological properties have been discovered so far. Research has found that it helps inhibit the breakdown of cells (often referred to as "free radicals") that is thought to be a major contributor to the development of cancer, heart disease and other degenerative diseases. The general use of chemotherapy and radiation in treatment of cancer, while being somewhat affective, can also be extremely damaging to other, normal tissue. Propolis, on the other hand, can inhibit the growth of cancerous cells while leaving normal healthy cells untouched. In other words, Propolis only targets diseased tissue.
